Clinton Edward Bowyer (born May 30, 1979 in Emporia , Lyon County , Kansas ) is an American NASCAR racing driver. He currently drives the full racing calendar of the Sprint Cup in a Toyota with starting number 15 from Michael Waltrip Racing .

Start of career

Clint Bowyer began his career in motocross racing at the age of five. In eight years he has won over 200 victories and numerous championships. In 1996 he started stock car racing at Thunderhill Speedway in Mayetta, Kansas, where he became Modified Champion in 2000. In 2001 he dominated the Modified Series at Lakeside Speedway, won 18 races, got 32 top 5 placements and was ultimately Modified Champion again.

In 2002 he began to drive in a weekly NASCAR amateur racing series. He achieved 9 pole positions, 12 wins and 32 top 5 placements. He finished second in the overall standings. He also won another Modified Title at I-70 Speedway . In the 2003 season, Bowyer drove full-time in the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division Midwest Series , where he was only able to achieve a top 10 placement in eleven races. He also began racing in the ARCA series and caught the eye of Richard Childress , owner of a NASCAR team, for leading 47 laps of the Nashville Superspeedway .

NASCAR career

2004

In 2004 Bowyer signed with Richard Childress Racing and shared the # 21 Reese's NASCAR Busch Series Chevrolet with Kevin Harvick in his first season . Bowyer drove 14 of the 34 season races for Richard Childress Racing. He also drove three races for Kevin Harwick Incorporated with the help of Andy Petree Racing . Clint Bowyer was able to achieve a pole position, four top 5 placements and seven top 10 placements. His best result was a third place on the Nashville Superspeedway. He finished the season in 29th place overall.

2005

Also in 2005 Bowyer drove for Richard Childress Racing in the NASCAR Busch Series. He won twice during the season. The first win of his Busch Series career was in the Federated Auto Parts 300 on the Nashville Superspeedway , which is his favorite track. In addition, he also won the Sam's Town 250 at Memphis Motorsports Park in Memphis ( Tennessee ). He got a total of twelve top 5 placements and 22 top 10 placements and ended the season in second place in the overall standings with 4869 points behind Martin Truex junior , who scored 4937 points.

Bowyer also made his Sprint Cup debut in the Subway Fresh Fit 500 at the Phoenix International Raceway . He started 25th and finished the race in 22nd place as the first driver one lap behind.

2006

In 2006 , Bowyer began his first full-time season in what was then the NASCAR Nextel Cup and was thus a contender for the NASCAR Rookie of the Year Award . He drove the # 07 Jack Daniel's Chevrolet from Richard Childress Racing. He was in the top 5 four times and in the top 10 eleven times. His best finish was a third place at the California Speedway in Fontana ( California ). He finished the season in 17th place overall.

On the side, he drove another season in the NASCAR Busch Series, which he finished in third place overall after winning once in the Dover 200 at Dover International Speedway , twelve times in the top 5 and 17 times in the top 10 could.

He also got the chance to drive in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series , where he won a race at Texas Motor Speedway .

2007

In the NASCAR Nextel Cup season 2007 Bowyer drove the full racing calendar again, in the NASCAR Busch Series, however, only selected races.

In the Daytona 500 , which he finished in 18th place, he crossed the finish line on the roof. On May 11, 2007, on Darlington Raceway , he started from pole position for the first time in his Nextel Cup career. He finished the race in ninth place. In the Pepsi 400 at Daytona International Speedway on July 7, 2007, he led the most laps and came in seventh. On August 25th at Bristol Motor Speedway he experienced his best result of the season to date when he finished the race in 3rd place. In the Chevy Rock and Roll 400 on September 8, 2007, he secured a place for the Chase for the Nextel Cup .

In the first race of the Chase, the Sylvania 300 , he started from pole position and then won the race. The maximum number of points achieved was 150 in the NASCAR Driver Rating , a point rating that analyzes a driver's performance. A driver has only achieved the maximum number of points six times since the introduction of this scoring system. Bowyer did it by running 222 laps, averaging 1.6 positions over the course of the race, setting the fastest lap 78 times, and never being outside the top 15.

In the NASCAR Busch Series, he was able to win two races. In total, he experienced 13 top 5 and 19 top 10 placements.

Bowyer started a total of five times in the 2007 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season . His best result was a fifth place in the American Commercial Lines 200 at the Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton ( Georgia ).

Since 2008

In 2008 he drove in the number 07 Jack Daniels Chevrolet in the Sprint Cup and in the number 2 BB & T / Camping World Chevrolet in the Nationwide Series. He became the Nationwide Series Top 10 Champion with one win and 29 races. He was 21 points ahead of Carl Edwards .
