James Christopher "Jamie" McMurray (born June 3, 1976 in Joplin , Missouri ) is an American racing driver . He drives a # 1 Chevrolet in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series for Chip Ganassi Racing . In 2003 he won the Rookie of the Year Award as the best newcomer to the Cup Series .

NASCAR career

1999 to 2002

In 1999 McMurray drove five races in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series , now the Camping World Truck Series, and in the following year he drove 15 races in which he achieved a top 4 and four top 10 results.

In 2001 and 2002 he completed the entire season in the NASCAR Busch Grand National Series and drove the Chevrolet Monte Carlo with starting number 27 for Brewco Motorsports. In the latter of the two years he won two races and finished the championship in sixth.

At the same time, he started in the top division of NASCAR, at that time known as the Winston Cup, and won his second race, the UAW-GM Quality 500 at Lowe's Motor Speedway . He holds the record as the fastest driver to win a NASCAR race.

2003 to 2005

In 2003, McMurray completed his first full Winston Cup season in the number 42 Dodge for Chip Ganassi Racing . He won the Rookie of the Year award 37 points ahead of Greg Biffle . He had five top five results during the season and was 13th in the championship. Since his main focus was on the Winston Cup, he did not start in all races in the Busch Series.

In the 2004 season, McMurray and his team were punished with a point deduction of 25 points because they had not complied with the dimensions of the car specified in the regulations for the Food City 500 . This deduction of points meant that he could not qualify for the Chase for the Nextel Cup because he was missing 15 points. During the season he achieved 23 top 10 results, twelve of them in the last 14 races alone. He finished the season 11th in the championship, which earned him a $ 1 million bonus . He also celebrated a victory in the Craftsman Truck Series in the 2004 season .

At the end of the 2005 season, he left his team with the number 42 car to go to the start for Roush Fenway Racing . At first, Chip Ganassi was adamant about not letting McMurray go for the 2006 season, but released him on November 7, 2005 from his remaining contract. The original plan was for McMurray to take over the number 6 Ford from Mark Martin in the 2007 season. But after Kurt Busch changed teams prematurely and Martin decided to drive for Roush for the 2006 season as well, McMurray took over the car with starting number 97 from Kurt Busch, which was then given the new starting number 26.

2006 to 2009 (Roush Fenway Racing)

In April 2006, Jack Roush's Crew Chief of Car # 26 promoted Jimmy Fenning to Team Leader. Bob Osborne, who was previously crew chief for Carl Edwards , has been named McMurray's new crew chief. The best result of the season for McMurray was a runner-up at Dover International Speedway . He finished the season in 25th place overall.

McMurray began the 2007 season with his new crew chief Larray Carter. On July 7th, he won the Pepsi 400 at Daytona International Speedway by 0.004 seconds over Kyle Busch . The photo finish was the tightest decision in the history of the racetrack and the second tightest since electronic timing was introduced.

He also drove the # 26 Ford for Roush Fenway Racing in 2008 and 2009, but in contrast to his team-mates, he remained inconspicuous. He achieved only five top 5 placements in those years and won just one race with the Amp Energy 500 of 2009. Since Roush Fenway Racing had to dissolve one of their five teams at the end of the 2009 season, McMurray lost his place in the number 26.

From 2010 (Chip Ganassi Racing)

At the beginning of the 2010 season , McMurray returned to Chip Ganassi Racing , then Earnhardt Ganassi Racing. He won his very first point race, the prestigious Daytona 500 . In the course of the season, McMurray sometimes performed much better than in previous years. On July 25, 2010, he won the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard at Indianapolis Motor Speedway , making him only the third driver to win the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard 400 in the same year. Despite several top 10 results, he missed the Chase , but he still won the Chase race in Charlotte and finished the season with three wins in 14th place overall.

In the next few seasons he could not build on the success of 2010, in 2011 he was 27th overall with four top 10 placements, and in 2012 he reached 21st place with 3 top 10s.

He started the 2013 season weak, but was able to improve quickly. He was able to win the Sprint Showdown race , which was excluded from the points classification , in October he won in Talladega . He qualified for the chase and finished the season in 15th place.

In 2014 he won the Sprint All-Star-Race and finished the season in 18th place with 13 top 10 results.

In 2015 and 2016 he didn't win any more, but he qualified for the Chase both times and ended the season in 13th place.

Other racing events

In 2014 it was announced that McMurray would compete in a Daytona prototype for Chip Ganassi Racing in the 24 Hours of Daytona . The next year he was able to win the race along with Tony Kanaan , Scott Dixon and his NASCAR teammate Kyle Larson . After AJ Foyt and Mario Andretti, he was only the third driver to win the Daytona 500 and the 24-hour race. In 2016 he competed again in the same team formation.
