David Gilliland (born April 1, 1976 in Riverside , California ) is an American racing driver who last drove the # 38 Ford Fusion for Yates Racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup .

Career

Regional NASCAR career

In 1996, Gilliland joined his father's AutoZone West Series team. In 1999 he won an event at Perris Auto Speedway , a dirt track. In 2000 he started a shortened season of the NASCAR AutoZone West Series to drive.

In 2005 he won five races in the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division, Southwest Series . He drove a number 11 Chevrolet for Centrifugal Technologies . Overall, he finished the season with five top 5 results and eight in the top 10. In the championship he was sixth at the end of the season.

During the 2004 season he drove full-time in the number 88 Chevrolet for MRG Motorsports . If the races did not overlap, he also drove the races in what was then the NASCAR Grand National Division, West Series . In the latter series, he won the first time at the Mesa Marin Raceway in his hometown. At the end of the season, he was awarded the title of Rookie of the Year . In the AutoZone Elite Division he had two wins in the same season.

National NASCAR career

His first attempt to start in a national NASCAR race he made in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series 2003 at the Las Vegas 350 , but he could not qualify. He made his first start in what was then the Busch Series in mid- 2005 at the Phoenix International Raceway . Gilliland started from position 28, but due to an early accident he dropped to position 43 out of 43. Later in the season he drove the second race in Phoenix - with the same result. In the Craftsman Truck Series he drove for Billy Ballew Motorsports with the number 15 in 22nd place. The race took place in Las Vegas .

In 2005 he drove in the Grand National Division and won the Toyota All-Star Showdown , as the regular first-place winner was disqualified for violating the rules. With the victory, he mainly attracted the attention of racing team owners of the Busch Series and the then Nextel Cup .

In 2006 he started driving part-time in the Busch Series with the number 84 for Clay Andrews. After the first four races of the season, he celebrated his first win at Kentucky Speedway on June 17th. This made him the first driver to win a Busch Series race that season and not be a full-time driver in the Nextel Cup.

Sprint Cup

He drove his first race in what was then the Nextel Cup in 2006 for CJM Racing at Infineon Raceway . With the number 72 he lost one place to his starting position 31 during the race. In August he replaced Elliott Sadler in his vehicle. He started from pole position in the UAW Ford 500 on the Talladega Superspeedway . The second pole of his career was the Daytona 500 . In the championship he finished the year in 28th place.

In 2007 he drove part-time in the Busch Series for Rensi Motorsports . With tenth place in Daytona , he drove his best race of the season.

On June 22nd, 2008 he finished second behind Kyle Busch at the Toyota / Save Mart 350 , which is his best result in the Sprint Cup to date.
