Yates Racing , known under the name Robert Yates Racing until 2007 , was a motorsport team that was active in the US NASCAR . For a short time it operated under the name Yates / Newman / Haas / Lanigan Racing after signing a partnership agreement with the Newman / Haas Racing team, which is active in the Champ Car . Doug Yates, son of previous owner Robert Yates, took over the team in the 2008 season , so the Robert was deleted from the team name. After a merger with Richard Petty Motorsports , the team was dissolved.

Sprint Cup

Car # 28/38/98

The starting number 38 in the 2007 season .

The number 28 has been used by Robert Yates since 1989. From 1989 to 1993, the number 28 car, sponsored by Havoline , was driven by Davey Allison , who was killed in a helicopter accident in 1993. Robby Gordon , Lake Speed and Ernie Irvan shared car # 28 for the remainder of the 1993 season, with Irvan winning twice in just nine races, the Goody's 500 at Martinsville Speedway and the Mello Yello 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway , which today known as Lowe's Motor Speedway. The good performance of Irvan resulted in the fact that he received a regular place in the starting number 28 for the 1994 season. This seemed to have paid off for Robert Yates, as Irvan had a good season, winning three races, making 13 top-5s and 15 top-10s, but then got badly injured in practice for race 21 of the season, the GM Goodwrench Dealer 400 at Michigan International Speedway . In the GM Goodwrench Dealer 400, the team then did not use a driver, for the subsequent races of the season Kenny Wallace took over the number 28, but Wallace was unable to build on the success of Irvan and only came into the top 10 twice.

At the beginning of the 1995 season, Dale Jarrett , who previously drove for Joe Gibbs Racing , took over the wheel of the number 28 because Ernie Irvan had still not fully recovered from his accident. Jarrett won the Miller Genuine Draft 500 at the Pocono International Raceway , now known as the Pocono Raceway. He finished the season 13th in the drivers' championship. Ernie Irvan returned at the end of the season driving a number 88 car. He finished in the top 10 twice in three races. In the 1996 season, Irvan and Jarrett swapped cars, so that Irvan was back in starting number 28 and Jarrett in starting number 88, which was used throughout the season from 1996. Irvan drove to the end of the 1997 season for Robert Yates in the number 28. In the 1996 season he was tenth overall, in the 1997 season he reached 14th place.

Kenny Irwin Jr. then took over the car in the 1998 season. He stayed until the end of the 1999 season but was unable to achieve good results. He was only able to achieve ten top 10 placements. Ricky Rudd took over the car in the 2000 season and made it into the top 10 19 times in his first season. Rudd also drove the number 28 in 2001 and 2002 and was victorious three times. At the end of the 2002 season, Rudd left Robert Yates Racing. He was in the top 10 drivers' overall standings every season he drove for Robert Yates Racing. In 2000 he finished fifth, in 2001 fourth and in 2002 tenth in the drivers' overall standings.

For the 2003 season, Robert Yates hired Elliott Sadler . Not only was the driver new, the number and the main sponsor also changed. M & M’s sponsored the car, which was now on the road as starting number 38. Sadler left the team during the 2006 season and moved to Evernham Motorsports . In his Robert Yates Racing season, Sadler won two races. He was also in the 2004 Chase for the Nextel Cup , NASCAR's play-off system. David Gilliland , who had recently won the NASCAR Nationwide Series , took over starting number 38 with the GFS Marketplace 400. So far he has started from pole position twice. In the UAW Ford 500 of the year 2006, which gave the team the right to start the Budweiser Shootout 2007, in which it finished second, and the Daytona 500 of the year 2007 . The fact that the team also had pole position in the 2007 season meant that it was back at the Budweiser Shootout 2008 . Gilliland also competed in all races in the 2008 season in starting number 38. In the following season, the team was renumbered to starting number 98. Paul Menard drove the number 98 until the team closed at the end of the season.

Car # 88

Car number 28 in Darlington 2008

The start number 88 has been used for the full season since 1996. Dale Jarrett, who drove number 28 the year before, which was returned to the recovered Ernie Irvan in 1996, drove this car in the 1996 season. In 1999 Jarrett won the Winston Cup in the number 88, back then with Quality Care / Ford Credit as sponsors on the car. With the beginning of the 2001 season UPS took over the sponsorship of the car with the starting number 88. During his time at Robert Yates Racing Jarrett won a total of 29 races, no other driver on the team won as many races as he did. In addition, from 1996 to 2002 he was always in the top 10 of the drivers' overall ranking. At the end of the 2006 season he left the team in the direction of Michael Waltrip Racing . His sponsor followed him. For the 2007 season, Robert Yates Racing got Ricky Rudd back. He put the car in the top 10 in the Coca-Cola 600 . On August 20, 2007, he officially announced his retirement as an active racing driver at the end of the season. About two weeks later, on September 2, 2007, he injured himself in the Sharp AQUOS 500 at California Speedway and had to pause until the Bank of America 500 , which took place on October 13, 2007 at Lowe's Motor Speedway . In the 2008 season, Travis Kvapil drove the car that was back with the number 28, as Hendrick Motorsports uses the number 88 for the Dale Earnhardt junior's car . After the first five races of the 2009 season , the team was disbanded.

Nationwide Series

Car # 90

The # 90 Nationwide Series team started the 2005 season with Citifinancial as a sponsor. Dale Jarrett and Elliott Sadler , who were also active in the Nextel Cup for Robert Yates Racing at the time, drove the car on a part-time schedule. Jarrett and Sadler brought it together to six top 5 placements. In the 2006 season, Sadler shared the cockpit with Stephen Leicht , Matt McCall and Justin Diercks , as well as Marc Goossens , who drove the street course races. For the 2007 NASCAR Busch Series season , Stephen Leicht is the sole driver of the # 90, which is still sponsored by Citifinancial. Easily won the 2007 Meijer 300 at Kentucky Speedway . Since the team could not be used in the 2008 season due to a lack of sponsors , it was sold to Germain Racing .

Partnership with Newman / Haas / Lanigan Racing

During the 2007 Allstate 400 at the Brickyard race weekend , Robert Yates announced that his team, Robert Yates Racing, and Newman / Haas Racing, a team from the Champ Car series, would be working together. But since Robert Yates announced that he would retire at the end of the season, the contract did not materialize.
