The village church Groß Grenz is a late medieval village church in the municipality of Bröbberow in the Rostock district . The church belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Parish Schwaan in the Rostock provost in the Mecklenburg parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany ( Northern Church ).

History and description of the building

Big Grenz bell

The village church Groß Grenz was built in the 14th century. It is a single-nave , Gothic church with a single -bay choir . The end of the choir in the east is formed by a divided octagon. The north and south walls are proven with buttresses . The foundation is made of field stone , while the walls are made of brick . There has been a sacristy on the north side of the church since the 19th century . The roof structure dates back to the Middle Ages. The ceiling consists of ribbed vaults with round and pear ribs .

The pointed arch windows originally had soffits made of molded stone. These were replaced by cast concrete replicas. The cast iron window grilles are neo-Gothic . In the choir area, diamond-shaped windows made of lead glass, which were occasionally painted, have been preserved. Only small remnants of this painting are preserved today.

The church used to have a tower with an octagonal pointed helmet and shielded gables decorated with shields. In August 1961, cracks appeared in the staircase vault of the tower for the first time, which quickly enlarged. On October 27, 1961, the upper part of the stair vault collapsed and severely damaged the tower in the southeastern area. Several reviewers concluded that the tower was beyond repair. The cause of the damage was possibly the subsequent installation of the tower stairs, which changed the structure of the tower. In 1962 the tower was removed by hand and the west side of the church was renovated. The first service after the collapse was celebrated on Good Friday 1963. Instead of the bell tower, a wooden belfry was put into operation a few meters west of the church in the same year. The bell bears the inscription " SOLI DEO GLORIA This bell was cast in the year of Christ 1772 by IV Schultz in Rostock"

Furnishing

The church is painted white with a lime paint. Under this paint you can see historical paintings in some places on the walls and ceilings. The pulpit and pews date from around 1895. The altar, which was built at the same time, is located in the choir and has Gothic tracery with a crown of arches, quatrefoil , fish bladder and turrets with crabs . The altar table is surrounded by a wooden altar screen .

On the north wall of the church there used to be a triumphal cross group. The two assistant figures, Mary and John, are still hanging in their place. After the First World War, the Christ corpus was replaced by a table for the fallen and is currently located in the area behind the altar.

The baptismal font is currently not in the church. Presumably it is in the Güstrow City Museum.

On the south side of the choir, three glazed shaped bricks are embedded in the wall next to the portal. A griffin is depicted on the left , while a lion is depicted on the middle and right. The wooden statue to the right of the portal depicts the reformer Martin Luther .

The organ comes from the organ builder Friedrich Friese III from 1868 and has not been usable since the mid-1980s. Thanks to private supporters, the organ was repaired in 2012 by master organ builder Bernd Kühnel. A series of events with professional organists is currently being prepared.

Support association

A condition assessment in 2009 revealed damage caused by rising damp. Cost-intensive renovation measures are required to prevent further damage. In the same year Bröbberow citizens founded the association for the preservation of the village church Groß Grenz.
