David Reutimann (born March 2, 1970 in Zephyrhills , Florida ) is an American NASCAR racing driver. He currently drives a Toyota Camry for BK Racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup .

Career

Early years

David Reutimann started his career in Dirt Track Modifieds and Late Models on small ovals in his native Florida . In 1997 he moved to the Slim Jim All Pro Series , a former NASCAR amateur racing series that hosted races in the southwestern United States . He made it into the top 10 eight times and finished fifth overall. His achievements earned him the "Rookie of the Year Award" as the best beginner of the year. The following year he won the "Sportsmanship Award". After a few average years, Reutimann celebrated several race wins in 2002 and came second in the overall standings.

These achievements did not go unnoticed in higher NASCAR divisions and so David Reutimann made his Busch Grand National Series debut at NEMCO Motorsports in 2002 in the Hardee's 250 at the Richmond International Raceway in Richmond , Virginia . He finished the race in 16th place. In 2003 he still drove for NEMCO Motorsports in the Busch Grand National Series and was often convincing. He also made it as a reserve driver at Kroger On Track For The Cure 250 at Memphis Motorsports Park , the Ford of Greg Biffle on the pole position to place. Shortly afterwards, he said on television that he was looking for a permanent place on NASCAR.

Craftsman Truck Series

In 2004, Reutimann signed a contract with Darrell Waltrip Motorsports, which gave him the chance to drive the Toyota truck with starting number 17 in the Craftsman Truck Series . In his very first season he started from pole position twice and achieved a total of ten top 10 placements. He finished the season in 14th place overall and was awarded the Rookie of the Year Award . In 2005 Reutimann celebrated his first win in the Craftsman Truck Series in the Toyota Tundra 200 on the Nashville Superspeedway in Nashville , Tennessee . He finished the season in 13th place overall. In 2006 David Reutimann drove for Darrell Waltrip Motorsports in the Craftsman Truck Series and delivered consistently good results. In the overall standings, he finished third with 3530 points behind Johnny Benson with 3539 points and Todd Bodine with 3666 points.

Because of his good performance, he also got a chance to compete in the NASCAR Busch Series. There he found a place with the team of Michael Waltrip , Darrell Waltrip's brother , in whose truck team he was active. In October 2006 Michael Waltrip announced that David Reutimann would drive the full race calendar of the NASCAR Nextel Cup and NASCAR Busch Series for his team, Michael Waltrip Racing , in the 2007 season . In the Nextel Cup he was supposed to drive the number 00 Toyota. For many years, the # 00 was the number of his father Buzzie Reutimann , who became known as an outstanding dirt track racing driver in the 1970s.

Since 2007

In the NASCAR Nextel Cup season 2007 David Reutimann qualified for 26 of the total of 36 races, in the two street course races he was replaced by PJ Jones due to a lack of experience . His best finish was a 13th place in the Chevy Rock and Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway . Often he was in a promising position, but the below-average material and technical problems prevented better placements.

In the Busch Series, David Reutimann showed several good performances in the 2007 season . On October 27, 2007 he won the Sam's Town 250 at Memphis Motorsports Park, leading in 194 of the total of 250 laps. In the overall standings it was enough to make second place.

In October 2007, during a Nextel Cup race in Concord , North Carolina, it was announced that Dale Jarrett would end his career in the 2008 season and that David Reutimann would drive the # 44 Dale Jarrett from the sixth race of the season , will pilot. Reutimann completed the first five races of the season in # 00. Also in the Nationwide Series, the former Busch Series, he was again active with the aim of winning the title.

In the 2008 season , Reutimann achieved some notable successes. He was particularly convincing in the last third of the season. In the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at the Richmond International Raceway , he led more than 100 laps, but only came in ninth. In the overall standings it was enough to place 22nd. In the Nationwide Series Reutimann finished seventh in the overall standings. At the beginning of the 2009 season, Michael Waltrip Racing had established itself in NASCAR and Reutimann got more competitive cars. In May he won his first Sprint Cup race with the Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway . He only just failed to qualify for the Chase for the Sprint Cup and finished 16th in the overall standings at the end of the season. Since his win at Lowe's Motor Speedway, he's one of only 20 drivers to have won at least one race in all three of NASCAR's top three divisions. On June 20, 2010, he won the LifeLock.com 400 at Chicagoland Speedway .
