Jerry Unser (born November 15, 1932 in Colorado Springs , Colorado , † May 17, 1959 in Indianapolis , Indiana ) was an American automobile racing driver .
Career
In 1957 he won the USAC Stock Car Championship. Jerry Unser was the first of the Unser family to compete in the Indianapolis 500 . When it only started in 1958, it was involved in a pile-up on the first lap along with twelve other vehicles. He flew over the wall in the third corner, but was not injured. Pat O'Connor died in the pile-up .
On May 2, 1959, Unser had an accident during a training run for the 500-mile race in Indianapolis and died on May 17 from the burn injuries he sustained. He was the older brother of Bobby and Al Unser and the father of Johnny Unser .
