Johnny Unser

Johnny Unser (born October 22, 1958 in Long Beach ) is a former American racing driver and motorsport official.

family

Johnny Unser is a member of the well-known US racing driver family Unser. His father was Jerry Unser , the older brother of Bobby and Al Unser , who are both his uncles . His father was the first Ours to compete in the Indianapolis 500 mile race . He died in a training accident at the Indianapolis 500 mile race in 1959 . Johnny Unser was seven months old at the time. His cousins Al junior and Robby also became professional racing drivers.

Racing career

Our competed in IMSA GTP races in the late 1980s and won the GTU class at the Sebring 12-hour race in 1989 . In 1993 and 1994 he drove a few races in the Champ Car series and in 1996 switched to the newly founded Indy Racing League . He finished the season in 24th overall.

In the same year he made his debut in the Indianapolis 500 mile race, where he competed five times; the best place in the final ranking was 18th in 1997 . Ours stayed in the Indy Racing League until 2000 and then only competed in selected sports car races.

In 2008 he became race director at the Atlantic Championship and, after retiring, was also press spokesman for Cooper Tire & Rubber Company . Ours has a kart track in Denver and is an official in the race management of the IndyCar Series .
