Paul Goldsmith (born October 2, 1925 in Parkersburg , West Virginia ) is a retired American motorcycle and automobile racer .

Career

Paul Goldsmith was a famous AMA motorcycle racer in the 1950s . The Harley-Davidson driver celebrated his first success in 1952 at the Milwaukee Mile in 1952. His greatest triumph was the victory at the 200 miles of Daytona in 1953. At the end of the year he was voted the most popular driver in the series.

In 1954 he celebrated a victory and stood on the podium four more times. In the championship he was second behind Joe Leonard . At the end of 1955 he left the motorcycle scene and joined the USAC stock car series and the NASCAR series as a works driver for Chevrolet .

In 1961 and 1962, Goldsmith won the USAC's overall standings in the USAC's stock car series. In NASCAR he was able to achieve nine victories in 127 starts. The best final placement in the championship he achieved in 1965 with fifth place overall.

The 500-mile Indianapolis he was six times at the start. In 1960 he was third on an Epperly - Offenhauser . Since the 500-mile race from 1950 to 1960 was part of the Formula 1 world championship , Goldsmith also achieved six points for the drivers’s world championship with his third place.
