James Ernest "Jimmy" Bryan (born January 28, 1926 in Phoenix , Arizona , † June 19, 1960 in Langhorne , Pennsylvania ) was an American racing driver.
Career
Bryan was one of the leading American racing drivers in the 1950s. After five years in races in the midget car class (miniature racing cars) and races on dust ovals as well as a qualification attempt in 1951, Bryan started for the first time in a race of the AAA National Series in Indianapolis in 1952 and achieved sixth place, which was an excellent rookie. In the following years it established itself as a fixture in the American Champ Car series. He won the US-wide championship in this class three times (1954, 1956 and 1957), and was almost unbeatable, especially in races on dust ovals, which were part of this championship at the time. But it also performed well on asphalt, as demonstrated by its second place in the Indy 500 in 1954 and third place in the same race in 1957. In total, Bryan won 19 of his 62 races in the top American single-seater series.
In 1957, the first race of the two worlds was held in Monza , in which American Champ Cars competed against European Formula 1 cars, and Jimmy Bryan won this race. With his victory in the Indianapolis 500 mile race in 1958 - at that time this race was part of the Formula 1 World Championship - he crowned his career.
In 1960 Bryan had a fatal accident while racing in Pennsylvania. He had qualified for the front row on the Langhorne dirt track , but caught a bump on the first lap and rolled over.
