Jimmy Davies (born August 18, 1929 in Glendale , † June 11, 1966 in Chicago ) was an American racing driver .

Career

Jimmy Davies was the second driver to win three USAC National Midget Championships in the 1950s. In 1949, he became the youngest ever winner of a US monoposto race when he won the 100-mile midget race in DelMar at the age of just under 20 - a record that was only broken in 2006 by Marco Andretti . Like Troy Ruttman and Jim Rathmann, Davies forged his birth certificate in order to be able to participate in the races.

Davies drove almost only midget races and won 46 racing events in his career. In 1962, his racing car was stolen from him after a race in Indianapolis. The vehicle reappeared a year later - the car was wrecked in a race in Sacramento - when Davies recognized it from pictures in a local newspaper.

In addition to the Midget races, Davies also competed five times in the Indianapolis 500 . Since this race was part of the Formula 1 World Championship between 1950 and 1960 , Davies has five starts here as well. In 1955 he finished third in Indianapolis, his best finish in the race.

Davies died in 1966 as a result of a racing accident at the Santa Fe Speedway in Chicago.
