Troy Ruttman (born March 11, 1930 in Mooreland , Oklahoma , † May 19, 1997 in Lake Havasu City , Arizona ) was an American racing car driver .
Career
Ruttman, who grew up in California , competed in 49 races in the AAA and USAC National Series between 1949 and 1964, of which he won two.
In 1949, at the age of 19, he started for the first time in the Indianapolis 500 and finished 12th in a Wetteroth - Offenhauser . Since the minimum age to start was 21, he forged his birth certificate. When he won the Indy 500 in 1952 at the age of 22 , he was the youngest ever winner in that race. He still holds this record today. Since it was also part of the Automobile World Championship at the time, he was also the youngest winner of a Grand Prix race until Fernando Alonso undercut him in the Formula 1 statistics during the 2003 Formula 1 World Championship . In the same year he was second in the AAA overall standings behind Chuck Stevenson . In 1954 he achieved fourth place together with Duane Carter , but in the following years he did not reach a top 10 result.
Like Alberto Ascari in 1952, he also ventured into direct overseas competition by unsuccessfully trying a Maserati 250F at the French Grand Prix of Reims in 1958 , after a champ car had competed in direct show with a Formula 1 racer on the previous one Weekend in Monza had simply "extended" his stay compared to his original plans.
After his last Indianapolis race in 1964, he said goodbye to racing. However, he struggled with "normal" life and struggled with drinking problems and gambling addiction . He died at the age of 67.
His younger brother Joe was also a racing driver and mainly active in NASCAR races. Although he did not win in the Winston Cup series, he had some successes in the Craftsman Truck Series and is still the oldest race winner in a NASCAR race.
