Relocation of London Bridge
A particular attraction is the partial reconstruction of London Bridge , which leads over an artificial river arm . The bridge, built in London in 1831, could no longer cope with the steadily increasing traffic over the Thames . So the British government decided to sell the bridge. Robert McCulloch , founder of the Arizona desert town of Lake Havasu and CEO of McCulloch Oil Corporation, bought the bridge for $ 2,460,000. According to an urban legend, McCulloch wrongly assumed during the auction that he was bidding not for London Bridge but for the much more famous Tower Bridge .
The bridge was dismantled and each stone of the facing was carefully numbered. All parts were brought by sea to Long Beach, California, more than 15,000 kilometers from London, and from there transported by truck to Lake Havasu City. Reconstruction began on September 23, 1968 with a ceremony at which London's then Lord Mayor laid the foundation stone. On October 10, 1971, the bridge, a reinforced concrete structure with the original cladding material, was (re) inaugurated.
