Edward Julius "Eddie" Sachs (born May 28, 1927 in Allentown , Pennsylvania , USA , † May 30, 1964 in Indianapolis , Indiana ) was an American racing driver.

Midget Cars

Sachs began his career as a mechanic for Dutch Culp . From 1949 he drove midget car races himself . 1954-1956 he was second in the Midwest Championship. In 1957 he had a serious accident that put him out of action for a few months. In 1958 he was finally able to win the Midwest Championship of the Midgets.

Champ Cars

Sachs started in 65 races for the AAA / USAC National Series between 1950 and 1964, of which he was able to win eight. In 1961 he achieved his best place in the championship with second place.

After failing to qualify three times between 1953 and 1956 , Sachs competed in the Indianapolis 500 for the first time in 1957 . In training he was able to qualify in a Kuzma - Offenhauser as second, but in the race he retired after 105 laps with an engine failure. He also had to end the races in 1958 , 1959 and 1960 early. 1961 and 1962 were his most successful years. In 1961 he took second place in an Ewing -Offenhauser, followed a year later in third place in the same vehicle. Since the race between 1950 and 1960 was part of the drivers' world championship, Sachs also has four Grand Prix starts in the statistics.

In 1964 he had a fatal accident in Indianapolis. On the second lap of the race, Dave MacDonald spun and crashed into the inner wall of the start-finish straight. His car was thrown back. Sachs couldn't avoid him anymore. Both drivers were killed in the accident in which the vehicles went up in flames. Five other vehicles were involved in the accident. Ronnie Duman was seriously injured. The actual cause of the accident is believed to be that MacDonald's new rear-engined Thompson 63 was still too untested, was bad and ultimately overwhelmed the driver.

Personal

Sachs was married to Nance McGarrity for the second time. Their son Eddie Sachs III also became a racing driver, but was never able to match his father's successes. He became a businessman and co-owner of a NASCAR team. In addition to his racing career, he ran a cocktail longue.
