Reports
background
After several failures and a dispute with Alain Prost , Cesare Fiorio was replaced as the sporting director of Scuderia Ferrari by Piero Lardi Ferrari . John Barnard left his position as technical director at Benetton after a dispute with team principal Flavio Briatore . His position was taken by Gordon Kimball .
Alex Caffi had to take a break due to injuries sustained in a traffic accident and was represented at Footwork by Stefan Johansson , who was looking for a new contract after leaving AGS .
Julian Bailey was replaced at Team Lotus by Johnny Herbert , who was able to start the 1991 season late in this way.
training
Due to rainy weather conditions on Friday, all pilots achieved their respective best training times on Saturday in dry track conditions.
For the first time in the current season, the pole position was not achieved by reigning world champion Ayrton Senna , but by Riccardo Patrese . He was the only one to break the 1:20 mark. Senna followed in third place behind Patreses team-mate Nigel Mansell . Alain Prost qualified for fourth place on the grid ahead of Roberto Moreno and Gerhard Berger as well as Jean Alesi and Nelson Piquet .
run
At the start, Mansell passed his team-mate. For 40 laps the two formed a double lead until Patrese had to go to the pits due to a puncture. As a result, he initially fell back to sixth place, but within six laps he made it back to third place behind Mansell and Piquet.
Mansell led the race so confidently that he carelessly slowed down on the last lap of the race and waved to the spectators. According to official information, this led to an electronics failure and a hydraulic problem that blocked the gear shift. Mansell stopped a few hundred meters from the finish. It was unofficially alleged that Mansell stalled the engine as a result of the sharp drop in engine speed. Because of the distance he had covered, he was classified in sixth place and thus received a World Championship point, which, however, was hardly taken into account in view of the ten points that were believed to be safe for victory. Nelson Piquet won instead of his rival in front of Stefano Modena , Riccardo Patrese, Andrea de Cesaris and Bertrand Gachot . Thus, both Jordan pilots secured the first World Championship points for the still new team. Due to technical problems, neither a McLaren MP4 / 6 nor a Ferrari 642 made it to the finish line.
