report

background

After the Bahrain Grand Prix , Nico Rosberg led the drivers' standings with eleven points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 33 points ahead of Nico Hülkenberg . Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 67 points ahead of Force India-Mercedes and with 68 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes .

At the Chinese Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white) and P Zero Soft (yellow), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

The DRS zones remained unchanged compared to the previous year, the measuring point for the first zone was 35 meters before turn 16, the zone itself was on the start-finish straight and began 98 meters after the last curve. The measuring point for the second DRS zone was in curve 12, the DRS was then allowed to be activated 752 meters before curve 14.

At Scuderia Ferrari , the team boss changed in the week before the race. Stefano Domenicali resigned. Marco Mattiacci , the previous CEO of Ferrari North America, took on this role. It was Mattiacci's first involvement in motorsport.

Jules Bianchi (four), Pastor Maldonado (three), Valtteri Bottas , Kevin Magnussen and Adrian Sutil (two each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Fernando Alonso , Hamilton (twice each), Kimi Räikkönen , Sebastian Vettel , Jenson Button and Rosberg (once each), six former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

Silvia Bellot (ESP), Gerd Ennser (DEU), Adrián Fernández (MEX) and Wang Feng (CHN) acted as race commissioners .

training

In the first free practice, Alonso set the fastest time ahead of Rosberg and Daniel Ricciardo . There was light drizzle, but the drivers used dry tires. With the exception of Raikkonen, all drivers achieved a time. Raikkonen had a problem with the power steering on his Ferrari. Pastor Maldonado attracted attention with a ride. In a left turn he simply drove straight ahead. Felipe Nasr took over the Williams from Valtteri Bottas and Giedo van der Garde took over the Sauber from Adrian Sutil in this training session . In the second free practice, Hamilton took the lead from Alonso and Rosberg. All drivers set a time. Maldonado made another mistake when he got stuck in the gravel trap at the pit lane entrance.

The third free practice took place in light rain. Ricciardo set the fastest lap ahead of Felipe Massa and Romain Grosjean . The Mercedes drivers, Alonso and Kevin Magnussen , decided not to drive a timed lap.

Qualifying

It rained lightly in qualifying.

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. Hamilton was the fastest driver on the full wets . Hulkenberg, who finished second, used intermediates . Maldonado did not drive a lap due to an oil leak that resulted in a change of the drive unit and thus did not qualify for the Grand Prix, but was allowed to race after a request from Lotus . Next to him, the Marussia and Caterham pilots and Esteban Gutiérrez did not make it into the second section.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Hamilton stayed in the lead. The McLaren drivers, Sergio Pérez , Sutil, Daniil Kwjat and Räikkönen were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Hamilton again drove the fastest lap and achieved pole position in front of Ricciardo and Vettel.

run

Hamilton kept the lead at the start. There have been some shifts behind him. Massa started well but got trapped between Ricciardo and Alonso with some contact between him and Alonso. Bottas and Rosberg touched behind the two. None of these incidents resulted in any damage to the vehicles. Vettel was ultimately behind Hamilton in second place in front of Alonso, Ricciardo, Massa, Hülkenberg and Rosberg. While Hamilton pulled away from the front, Rosberg overtook Hülkenberg and Massa on the first laps. In the initial phase, Sutil gave up due to a technical defect.

At the first pit stops, Massa was the first from the leading group. There was a problem changing the left rear tire that lost a lot of time and fell back into the rear field. Alonso pitted a lap ahead of Vettel and managed to drive past him. Hamilton and Ricciardo stayed a few laps longer on the track. The riders in the top group switched from the soft to medium mixture. After the first stop, Hamilton led in front of Alonso, Vettel, Rosberg and Ricciardo.

After Vettel had been overtaken by Rosberg on lap 23, he was right in front of his team-mate Ricciardo. In the 24th round, Vettel was instructed by the team management to let Ricciardo pass. Vettel asked the team management about Ricciardo's tire compound and then about the age of his tires and then initially refused the team order. After another radio message with the information that Ricciardo was on a two-stop strategy, Vettel let him pass on the 26th lap at the end of the start-finish straight. Then Ricciardo pulled away from him for a few seconds. In the meantime, Grosjean had parked his vehicle in the pits with a gearbox failure.

After Rosberg had caught up with Alonso, Alonso was the first driver in the leading group to make his second pit stop. Kobayashi, who had switched to the soft tire compound shortly before, passed the hag one lap ahead of him, about which he complained to his team by radio. One lap later, Vettel pitted, Rosberg slipped off the track and also changed his tires. In the next laps, the other drivers from the leading group came to the pits. Hamilton was again the longest on the track and thus consistently in the lead. On lap 43, Rosberg, who had slightly fresher tires, managed to get past Alonso. Ricciardo, who also had fresher tires than Alonso, caught up with Alonso lap after lap in the final phase, but no longer had as large fuel reserves as Alonso. Ricciardo was no longer able to get within striking distance of Alonso.

Hamilton won the race ahead of Rosberg and Alonso. Mercedes achieved a double victory for the third time in a row.

Since the checkered flag was falsely waved when Hamilton was still in the 55th lap, the result after 54 instead of 56 laps was counted as the official race result. The only change that resulted was for Kamui Kobayashi and Jules Bianchi . Bianchi was in 17th place after 54 laps and was overtaken by Kobayashi within the original two last laps.

In the world championship, Rosberg remained in the lead, but Hamilton reduced the gap again. Alonso took third place again, but was already a long way behind the Mercedes drivers. In the constructors' world championship, Mercedes extended its lead. Red Bull improved to second place, Force India fell back to third place.
