2008 Monza 1000km race

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 37th 1000 km race in Monza , also 1000 KM di Monza, Le Mans Series, Monza , took place on April 27, 2008 at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza and was the second championship run of the Le Mans Series of this year.

The race

As at the season opening in Barcelona , the two Peugeot prototypes secured the front row of the grid in qualifying . With a time of 1: 31.470 minutes, Nicolas Minassian lapped the track fastest in the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP with starting number 8.

The race was overshadowed by the serious accident of Stéphane Ortelli from Monaco in the Courage-Oreca LC70 . Almost an hour before the end of the race, the rear wing of the car broke at more than 300 km / h when approaching the Rettifilo chicane. The vehicle swerved to the right, vented, and took off. After several overturns - the Audi R10 TDI , in which Allan McNish was sitting at the time , the Oreca missed by only centimeters - the completely destroyed wreck got caught on a boundary fence. Ortelli was able to get out of the wreck himself and, besides bruises, only had to complain about a broken ankle.

Right from the start, the two Peugeot led in the order Marc Gené before Stéphane Sarrazin . In third place, Rinaldo Capello drove in the Audi with the number 1, which had to pits after just 15 minutes because of a punctured tire. As a result, an intense three-way battle between the two Peugeot and the Audi of Alexandre Prémat and Mike Rockenfeller developed , which became a duel because Nicolas Minassian in the Peugeot with the number 7 lost a lot of time in the pits after a problem with the drive shaft. The Ortelli accident triggered a lengthy safety car phase . Then Pedro Lamy and Mike Rockenfeller fought a tough duel for the lead. There were several tight overtaking maneuvers that ultimately ended in a collision. Both vehicles had to head for the pits; Rockenfeller for repairs and Lamy for serving a stop-and-go penalty , as the race management identified him as the culprit in the vehicle collision. Since the repair work on the Audi took longer than the penalty stop at Peugeot, Lamy won in the end with a lead of 45 seconds over Rockenfeller in the Audi. It was the eighth consecutive victory for a Peugeot 908 HDi FAP in a Le Mans Series race.
