The first 1000 km race of Monza , also II. Gran Premio Supercortemaggiore, 1000 Kilometers, Autodromo di Monza , took place on June 27, 1954 at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza . The race was not part of any racing series.

The race

In almost all publications, the 1965 Monza 1000 km race is considered the first long-distance race on the traditional Monza circuit. In fact, this event was the fourth of its kind. As early as 1954, 1955 and 1956, 1000 km races were held in Monza. Officially these races were called Supercortemaggiore and were organized by the state-owned Italian lottery company.

In 1954, driving on the banked curves was waived, as happened at the Formula 1 World Championship that year. A comparison of the times and speeds: In the Formula 1 went José Froilán González in the Ferrari 553 the fastest lap in a time of 2: 00.800 min, which corresponds to a section of about 189 km / h equivalent (won the race Juan Manuel Fangio in Mercedes-Benz W 196 ). Gonzáles also set the fastest lap in the 1000 km race. This time in the Ferrari 750 Monza he achieved a time of 2: 08.500 min and was about 8 seconds slower than in Formula 1. The average was 176.498 km / h.

The race ended with a double victory for Scuderia Ferrari. Mike Hawthorn and Umberto Maglioli won with a lead of one lap over teammates Gonzalés and Maurice Trintignant .
