Maserati 250S

The Maserati 250S , also Maserati 250 Sport , was a sports car prototype that was developed by Maserati in 1957 .

Development history and technology

The 250S was an attempt by Maserati engineers to give the 200S more power. For this purpose, the 2-liter 4-cylinder in- line engine was brought to a 2.5-liter displacement by increasing the bore and stroke to 96 × 86 mm. In addition to boring out the block, a new crankshaft was also designed. The result was sobering, as the engine only delivered 6 hp more power than the 2-liter unit. The chassis and technology were adopted from the 200S racing version, the 200SI , so that these two Maserati models cannot be distinguished from the outside. Four 200SI chassis became 250S in this way.

Racing history

The 250S has been driven in sports car races in both Europe and the United States of America. Surprisingly, the entry and start lists for the 1954 24-hour Le Mans race and the Monza 1000 km race of the same year include 250S. A 2.9-liter 6-cylinder in-line engine is specified as the unit for the 250S at Le Mans. In Monza it is said to have been the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder in-line engine. Since these taxes contradict other sources, it cannot be clarified beyond doubt which Maserati models were involved. The same applies to the 250S at the 1956 Agadir and Senegal Grand Prix

The race starts between 1957 and 1964 are proven. In the 1957 Sebring 12-hour race , Roy Salvadori and Carroll Shelby competed in the factory 250S. The team was disqualified after 68 rounds for illegal refueling. The first finish came in 1957 at the Nassau Trophy , where Stephen Spitler was 21st. Jim Hall celebrated the first victory a year later in a sports car race in Eagle Mountain .

In addition to this success, there was a second race win with the 250S, taken in a less important race in the USA.
