The 1956 Senegal Grand Prix , the 1956 Dakar 2-hour race , also Grand Prix du Senegal, Dakar , was a sports car race that took place on a circuit in Dakar on March 11 of this year . The race was not part of any racing series.

The race

In the 1950s, motorsport was definitely important in North and West Africa. In Algeria , Morocco , Senegal and Angola , in addition to monoposto , mainly sports car races were held. European teams also entered vehicles and drivers in these races. In 1956, two sports car events took place in close succession, the Agadir Grand Prix at the end of February and the Senegal Grand Prix two weeks later. Many drivers therefore drove both races.

The race took place on a circuit in the capital Dakar, the route and length of which are unknown. However, the average speed of the fastest race lap, which is specified as 210.923 km / h, shows that it must have been a fast course. As in Agadir , Scuderia Ferrari celebrated a double victory in Dakar . Once again, Maurice Trintignant was successful ahead of his team mate Harry Schell . Third was Jean Behra , who started for Maserati .
