Jean Lucas (born April 25, 1917 in Le Mans ; † September 27, 2003 ) was a French racing driver .

Career

Jean Lucas began his racing career as a rally driver . The end of the 1940s he moved to the racetrack and celebrated as a partner of Luigi Chinetti the Spa 24 Hours in a Ferrari 166mm his first great success in international motorsport.

In 1953 Lucas became team manager at Gordini and was also available to the team as a substitute driver. At the same time, however, he continued to contest sports car races in Europe and North Africa, where Lucas was a very popular driver in the 1950s. The Frenchman drove his only Formula 1 world championship run in 1955 at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza . Gordini driver Robert Manzon had to cancel at short notice and Lucas stepped in. During the race, engine failure on the Gordini Type 32 stopped him and forced him to give up prematurely.

In 1956 he was on a Ferrari 625F1 fifth at the Grand Prix of Caen and in 1957 second in the Coupe de Vitesse in Reims in one of Alan Brown borrowed Formula 2 - Cooper . At the 24 Hours of Le Mans he finished third in a Jaguar D-Type with Jean-Marie Brussin as his partner.

A serious accident with a Maserati 250F at the Morocco Grand Prix put an end to Lucas' sporting career. After his recovery he took over administrative activities in sports car racing and in 1962 founded the automobile magazine Sport-Auto together with Gérard Crombac .
