Grand Prix of Rhodesia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rhodesia Grand Prix was a motorsport event that was held almost annually in Rhodesia from 1960 to 1976 . Most of the races were advertised according to the Formula 1 regulations, but had no world championship status . The record winner is the Rhodesian racing driver John Love , who won six out of 16 races.

history

The Rhodesian Automobile Racing Club was the organizer of the Rhodesian Grand Prix . The first race was held in 1960. This year it was advertised according to the Formula Libre , after which the regulations corresponded to those of Formula 1. Until 1965, the races were individual events that were not integrated into larger racing series. From 1966 to 1974, the Rhodesia Grand Prix was rounds of the South African Formula One Championship ; In 1976 the race was part of the South African Formula Atlantic Championship .

Three runs of the series took place in the state capital Salisbury (today: Harare ): The first was held on the Belvedere Airport Circuit , the last two on the Donnybrook Raceway . From 1961 to 1973 the race was held in the provincial metropolis of Bulawayo , which is less far from South Africa than Harare; in this way the attractiveness of the race for South African pilots should be increased. The venue was the James McNeillie Circuit in Kumalo, a suburb of Bulawayo, until 1970 , after which the event changed to the newly constructed Breedon Everard Raceway .
