Jacobus "Jackie" Pretorius (born November 22, 1934 in Potchefstroom , † March 30, 2009 in Johannesburg ) was a South African racing driver .
Career
Jackie Pretorius was one of the top drivers in the South African Formula 1 Championship in the 1960s. In 1966 he was ninth on a Lotus at the Grand Prix of South Africa, which was not part of the World Cup that year . Between 1968 and 1970 he celebrated successes with monopostos and sports cars from Lola .
He made his debut in the Formula 1 World Championship in 1968 at the South African Grand Prix in Kyalami . With the Brabham BT11 of Team Pretoria he crossed the finish line 10 laps behind the winner Jim Clark and was not classified. Also in 1971 and 1973 Pretorious competed in the South African Grand Prix. In 1973 he took over a works car from Frank Williams after his regular driver Nanni Galli was seriously injured during a test drive. In both races he had to give up the race before the checkered flag fell due to technical defects.
His best year in the championship of his home country was 1971 when he won two races for the Gunston team .
About three weeks before his death, Pretorius had been hospitalized after a robbery. He had suffered serious injuries that led to a heart attack, which he succumbed to. He had been seriously injured in a similar attack about five years earlier, while his wife Shirley had lost her life in the attack.
