Lukas "Luki" Botha (born January 16, 1930 in Pretoria ; † October 1, 2006 ) was a South African racing car driver .

Career

Botha went in the early 1960s seater race at Rhodesia and South Africa . In late 1966 he finished second in the Rhodesian Grand Prix on a Brabham BT11 . Only three weeks later he had his first and only Formula 1 appearance . At the 1967 South African Grand Prix in Kyalami , he started on a Brabham BT17 - Climax , which he registered as a privateer. The race did not go very well, as Botha spent 20 laps in the pits for repairs after a collision at the start. He was still in the field at the end of the race, but was not counted because the winner was too far behind.

In 1968 Botha exchanged the Climax engine for a Repco engine and continued racing in the countries of southern Africa. A serious accident at a racing event in Mozambique ended his career that same year. Nine spectators died when Botha lost control of the Brabham and spun off the track. Botha was uninjured, but he no longer raced.

After his racing career ended, Botha worked as a civil engineer in Soweto and returned to South Africa in the 1990s. He and his family settled in his hometown of Pretoria, where he lived until his death in October 2006.
