List of mayors of Toronto

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
William Lyon Mackenzie was Toronto's first mayor.

That list heads the mayors of Toronto , Canada's largest city .

Shortly after the name of the city changed from " York " to " Toronto " on March 6, 1834 - in order to be able to differentiate itself better from New York City - the city received its first mayor on March 27 of the same year, William Lyon Mackenzie (1795–1861 ). Mackenzie was not elected directly by the citizens, but appointed by the City Council . This then happened until 1857 and later from 1867 to 1874.

Toronto has been part of the so-called Metropolitan Toronto since 1953 . This region had the same boundaries as today's Toronto, originally consisted of 13 cities and towns that had their own mayor and council. From 1953 to 1997 Metropolitan Toronto had its own chairman ( Chairman of the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto ) in addition to the mayor of Toronto .

Since January 1, 1998, the Metropolitan Toronto merged together with the areas of North York , Scarborough , Etobicoke , York and East York , which are henceforth considered to be districts of Toronto. Since then there has been no regional government chaired by the Chairman of the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto . The Mayor of Toronto chairs the city government, the Toronto City Council and a chamber of 44 councilors. A Deputy Mayor is elected from these ranks . Since 2006, the Toronto Mayor's term has lasted four years. With a few exceptions, the mayors of Toronto were directly elected by the population in the remaining years. Currently the 65th Mayor is John Tory .

The seven mayors who had two terms in office with one interruption are only counted once in this list.
