George Monro

George Monro (* 1801 in Scotland , † January 5, 1878 in Toronto ) was a Canadian businessman, politician and 6th Mayor of Toronto.

Life

George Monro emigrated to Niagara-on-the-Lake with his parents and moved to York , then Toronto, in 1814 . Together with his brother he started working in a grocery store and later went into business as a wholesaler and importer of British and Indian goods. He was elected to the city council in 1834 and served as mayor of Toronto from January 1841 to January 1842. During the Upper Canadian Revolution he was a vigilante captain. Monro ran for the legislative assembly, but failed. George Monro belonged to a church and Bible society and later was director of a bank and an insurance company. With the exception of 1836 to 1845 he remained a city councilor. Monroe retired from active politics in 1856.

George Monro married Christine Fisher of Montreal around 1822 and had two sons and four daughters with her.
