Bert Wemp

Bert Sterling Wemp (* 1889 in Tweed, Ontario ; † February 5, 1976 ) was a Canadian journalist and 42nd Mayor of Toronto .

Wemp grew up in the Cabbagetown district of Toronto . In 1905 he began working as an editor for the Toronto Telegram newspaper . During the First World War he served in the 218th Squadron of the Royal Naval Air Service and was the first Canadian to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross . During the Second World War he was a foreign correspondent . In 1921 and 1922 he was elected to the school committee and became vice president of the finance committee. During his tenure, he succeeded in replacing the movable classrooms with school buildings. In 1924-25 he was elected to the city council and was a member of the control committee in 1927, 1928 and 1929. From January 1930 to January 1931, Wemp was Mayor of Toronto. After his tenure, he returned to the Toronto Telegram as an editor. He died 86-year-old to emphysema .
