John Beverley Robinson

John Beverley Robinson (born February 21, 1821 in York , today's Toronto , Ontario , † June 19, 1896 in Toronto) was a Canadian politician . He was the twelfth mayor of Toronto and served as lieutenant governor of the province of Ontario from 1880 to 1887 .

biography

John Beverley Robinson is the son of Sir John Robinson, a major political figure in Upper Canada . His father was a member of the Supreme Court of Upper Canada from 1829 to 1862. His son attended Upper Canada College between 1830 and 1836 . He also played cricket there and was a member of the first Canadian cricket team. He also worked as a boxer and inaugurated the Toronto Athletic Club in 1891, which he chaired until his death.

In December 1837, during the Upper Canadian Rebellion , Robinson served as aide-de-camp for Sir Francis Bond Head . After the suppression of the uprising, he was given the task of delivering dispatches to Washington . He then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1844. In the 1850s Robinson was elected several times to the Toronto City Council and was appointed mayor by the council from January 1856 to January 1857. During his tenure he was also involved in many company foundings such as the Toronto and Georgian Bay Canal Company in 1856.

In 1858 Robinson was elected to the House of Commons of the Province of Canada and represented Toronto there. He promoted the railway project of the Northern Railway of Canada and served as president of the company from 1862 to 1875. In 1863 he failed to be re-elected. In 1872, however, he was elected to the Canadian House of Commons ; There he represented as a member of the Conservative Party first the constituency of Algoma, from 1875 then West Toronto. Governor General Lord Lorne swore in Robinson on July 1, 1880 as Lieutenant Governor Ontario. He held this representative office until May 31, 1887.

Robinson married Mary Jane Hagerman on June 30, 1847, with whom he had three sons and two daughters. He died in 1896 as a result of a stroke.
