Edward Clarke
Edward Frederick Clarke (born April 24, 1850 in Bailieborough , County Cavan , Ireland , † March 3, 1905 in Toronto ) was a Canadian journalist, politician and the 26th mayor of Toronto.
Life
Edward Clarke was the son of Irish Richard Clarke and immigrated to Toronto in 1864 after the death of his father. He initially apprenticed to the Toronto newspaper The Globe as a printer and later worked at The Toronto Mail - both newspapers later merged to form The Globe and Mail . In 1872 he was one of the leading figures in a printer strike. In 1884 he married Charlotte Elizabeth Scott. He represented Toronto in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1886 to 1894 and was a member of the Canadian House of Commons from 1896 to 1904 and 1904 to 1905 . From January 1888 to January 1892 he held the office of Mayor of Toronto. Clarke was a member of the Conservative Party of Canada . He was also a director at the life insurance company Excelsior Life Insurance Company .
