John Tory (2018)

John Howard Tory (born May 28, 1954 in Toronto ) is a Canadian politician and since December 1, 2014 the 65th and currently incumbent Mayor of Toronto.

Life

Tory was a lawyer, political strategist and businessman, his father John A. Tory was also a successful lawyer and founded Torys, one of the largest Canadian law firms. He ran for the office of mayor, but lost to environmental activist David Miller , who is close to the social democratic New Democratic Party . From 2004 to 2009 he was chairman of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario and represented the constituency of Dufferin — Peel — Wellington — Gray in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 2005 to 2007 . In the following years he withdrew from politics and worked as a presenter for the radio station CFRB . In the local elections in 2010 there was speculation about his renewed candidacy, but he turned it down. From 2010 to 2014 he was chairman of the non-profit organization CivicAction , which deals with economic and social problems in the Toronto area. On February 24, 2014, Tory announced that it would run for the office of mayor in the following local elections. The previous incumbent Rob Ford was because of numerous scandals, u. a. because of racist remarks, controversial, and had finally decided not to run because of cancer. On October 27, 2014, with a turnout of around 60% with 40.3% of the vote against Doug Ford , the brother of the previous mayor (33.7% of the vote) and against Olivia Chow of the NDP (23.2%) ) elected mayor. Tory was also supported by many representatives of the Liberal Party of Canada . Tory has been married since 1978, has four children, and is a member of the United Church of Canada .
