William Barclay McMurrich

William Barclay McMurrich (born November 1, 1842 in Toronto , Ontario , † February 9, 1939 ibid) was a Canadian lawyer, politician and the 23rd mayor of Toronto.

McMurrich was a Scottish immigrant son and educated at Knox Academy and Upper Canada College private school . He completed his art studies in 1864 at the University of Toronto and went on to study law. He was admitted to the bar in 1866. In 1868, he was elected commissioner for the public schools of Ward St. Andrew's. He stayed in this position for eight years. In 1879 he was elected to the city council and from January 1881 to January 1883 he was mayor of Toronto. He ran for the Canadian general election in 1882 and just lost to James Beaty .
