Joseph Sheard

Joseph Sheard (* 1813 in England ; † 1883 ) was a Canadian architect, politician and 19th Mayor of Toronto .

Sheard immigrated to York , then Toronto, in 1833 and began his professional career as a carpenter, builder and worked as an architect in the 1840s. As a public works construction manager, he refused to erect a gallows to hang the two leaders of the Upper Canadian Rebellion, Samuel Lount and Peter Matthews. Sheard was appointed mayor by the council for the period January 1871 to January 1872.
