Robert Hood Saunders (born May 30, 1903 in Toronto , Ontario , † January 16, 1955 ) was a lawyer, president of the Canadian National Exhibition , chairman of the board of the Ontario Hydro company and the 48th mayor of Toronto .

Robert Saunders was considered very down-to-earth during his tenure as mayor from 1945 to 1948. He was a pioneer for the Toronto subway and fought for the removal of slum settlements . In 1946 he took over the idea of ​​a traffic safety program for elementary schools from Detroit . From this, Saunders initiated the so-called Safety Elephant program for Toronto .

After serving as mayor, he became chairman of the state-owned Ontario Hydro electric company in February 1948 . He developed Ontario's hydropower resources; especially those along the St. Lawrence Seaway . Saunders remained chairman of the company until his death on January 14, 1955. He was killed in a plane crash while on a business flight from Windsor to London . He was cremated in Toronto's Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
