John Sewell (* 1940 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian politician, writer of works on community and historical topics and was the 58th Mayor of Toronto from December 1, 1978 to November 30, 1980 . In 2005, Sewell was awarded the Order of Canada .

Sewell grew up in The Beaches district of Toronto and studied a. a. at the University of Toronto English literature. In 1961 he received his degree. Sewell became politically active for the first time in 1966, when he fought with residents against the expropriation and leveling of the working class. He was elected to the city council in 1969 and during this time made a name for himself in the reform wing of the council. In the 1978 mayoral election, the right wing was divided and the votes were split between David Paul Smith and Tony O'Donohue. Sewell benefited from this and was able to unite the majority with less than 50% of the vote. During his tenure, he was often described by the media as radical. He established himself as the main critic of the Toronto Police Department, who, in his opinion, are more accountable to the people. He was a champion for gay rights. Although he was able to win different political wings, he lost the mayoral election on November 10, 1980 against the conservative politician despite the increase in votesArt Eggleton . In 1981 he was re-elected to the city council, for which he worked until 1984.
