Joseph Oliver
Joseph Oliver (* 1852 in Erin (Ontario) , † 8. January 1922 in Toronto ) was from January 1908 to January 1910 the 34th mayor in the Canadian Toronto.
biography
Born in Erin in 1852, Oliver lived in Toronto since he was three years old. He worked in the logging business. In 1885 he was elected to the local school board, in 1895 and 1901 in the Toronto City Council . In 1908 and 1909 he was Toronto mayor.
Incidents during Oliver's tenure
In March 1909, Joseph Oliver was asked about his opinion on dealing with offensive plays and shows. He made the statement that in the event of such incidents the theater's license should be withdrawn immediately: "Just as soon as the wrong show has made its character known, stop it, and take away the license from theater."
