June Rowlands
June Rowlands (born May 14, 1924 in Saint-Laurent (Montreal) ; † December 21, 2017 in Toronto ) was the 60th mayor of Toronto from December 1, 1991 to November 30, 1994, and thus the first woman in this office. Rowlands was a longtime city councilor and ran unsuccessfully for the Liberal Party of Canada in 1984 and was chairwoman of the Toronto Police Services Board from 1989 to 1991 .
After Art Eggleton's eleven-year term , he did not stand for re-election. Rowlands was able to clearly defeat competitor Jack Layton (32.88%) with 58.53% of the vote . During her first year in office, Rowlands caused a sensation with her controversial decision when she banned the music band Barenaked Ladies from performing in Nathan Phillips Square on the grounds that her name was sexist. During her tenure, she came under further public criticism when she claimed she was ignorant of the bloody crackdown on the 1992 youth unrest on Yonge Street . After one term, Rowlands was replaced with 58,952 votes against 70,248 by their challenger Barbara Hall . After this defeat, she withdrew from politics.
