Diazoma

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Diazoma ( Greek  διάζωμα "belt") refers to one of the broad walks in the Greek theater , which divided the rows of seats into two or three zones (tiers). In the Roman theater building the corresponding term was praecinctiones or also balteus .

The approximately 1.80 m wide corridors were closed off at the back by a 90 cm high wall, over which the next tier rose. Later praecinctio also referred to the rank itself.
