John Shaw

John Shaw (* 1837 ; † 1917 ) was a lawyer, politician and 29th Mayor of Toronto .

From 1883 to 1895 he was a member of the city council and ran unsuccessfully against the then incumbent Robert John Fleming a year later . In 1897 he ran again after Fleming resigned from office in August and won the election. Shaw was Mayor of Toronto from August 6, 1897 to January 1899. He and his wife attended the opening ceremony of Toronto City Hall . After his tenure as mayor, he was elected to the control committee of the city council for two years and joined the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario in 1908 and was a member of the legislative assembly of Ontario until he left politics in 1911 .
