David Crombie (1983)

David Edward Crombie (born April 24, 1936 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian politician, professor and consultant. Crombie was the 56th Mayor of Toronto from December 1, 1972 to November 30, 1978.

Life

Crombie was a senior lecturer in politics at Ryerson University in the 1960s . During this time he was faced with urban reforms in Toronto. The city council strongly promoted the construction project, allowing a large number of buildings to be demolished in order to build new apartments, office buildings and highways. Crombie, along with John Sewell and other reformers, led a grassroots movement that advocated cutting urban development in favor of improving social services and community interests.

In 1970 Crombie was elected to the city council and in 1972 mayor. During his tenure, he imposed a height limit for the construction of new buildings, promoted local public transport, prevented the construction of new highways and improved the community's say. These measures brought Crombie wide popularity among the population, but in return met with displeasure in the business world. The development was perceived by the economy as a political anti-growth movement and gave way to the regions of York and Peel , which allowed more growth with fewer taxes and requirements. The enormous support in the population earned him two re-elections in 1974 and 1976. In August 1978 he resigned as mayor when he won a seat in the House of Commons in a by-election as a candidate for the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada . He was Minister of Health for a short time under Prime Minister Joe Clark , who was voted out of office after just one year. Under Brian Mulroney , Crombie became Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development , later Secretary of State . Since Crombie perceived an increasing conservatism in the government, he decided not to run for the federal election in 1988 and returned to urban politics, where he participated in the leadership of the Royal Commission on the expansion of the Toronto waterfront . On May 13, 2004, he was elected Officer of the Order of Canada .

His son Jonathan Crombie (1966-2015) was an actor and was best known for his role in the television series Anne of Green Gables .
