James Edward Smith

James Edward Smith (born December 25, 1831 in London , † March 9, 1892 in Toronto ) was a Canadian politician and from January 1867 to January 1869 the 17th mayor of Toronto. Smith emigrated to Toronto with his family from England in 1841. He was a director of a British life insurance company. Page began his political career with the election to the city council in 1857. He represented the district of St. John's and served as city council until 1870. In 1867 he was appointed mayor by the council and held the office for two years.
