George Reginald Geary

George Reginald Geary (born August 12, 1873 in Strathroy, Ontario , † April 30, 1954 in Toronto ) was a lawyer , politician and the 35th mayor of Toronto.

Life

George Geary attended Upper Canada College, and then went on to study law at the University of Toronto . In 1896 he finished his studies with a degree. Soon afterwards his interest in politics grew. In 1904 he became school representative; from 1905 to 1907 Geary was a city ​​councilor . He then became an advisory board member of the Ontario provincial government. In 1908 he applied to be mayor of Toronto, but failed because of Joseph Oliver . Two years later he was able to assert himself in the election and held the mayor's office from January 1910 to January 1912. During his tenure, he promoted plans to rebuild the port.

From 1915 he served in the First World War . He was awarded the Military Cross and received the Legion of Honor and the Croix de guerre from the French government . He left the army on March 24, 1919.

In 1925 he was elected to the House of Commons as a member of the Conservative Party and held this office until 1935. In the cabinet of Prime Minister Richard Bedford Bennett he was Canada's 21st Justice Minister from August 14 to October 22, 1935. In the same year he became a member of the Canadian Privy Council .

Geary died in 1954 at the age of 80 and was buried in St. James Cemetery.
