John George Bowes

John George Bowes (* 1812 (?) In Clones , Ireland , † May 20, 1864 in Toronto ) was a Canadian politician and from January 1851 to January 1853 the first time mayor of Toronto; from January 1861 to January 1864 a second time.

Bowes emigrated from Ireland in 1833 and was employed by his stepbrother in York as a merchant. In 1838 he opened his own business and soon made a name for himself as a successful businessman. His political career began in 1850 when he was elected to the city council, and a year later he was elected mayor by the council. During this first term in office he was embroiled in a scandal in which he was accused of having illegally enriched himself with the proceeds of the Simcoe & Lake Huron Union Railroad . In 1852 he was a founding member of the Toronto and Guelph Railway Company , which he also served as president. In 1854 he was elected to the legislative assembly of the provinces of Canada as representative for Toronto. In 1856 he was appointed mayor for the second time by the council.

John George Bowes was married with nine children.
