M! Ssundaztood is the second album by pop singer P! Nk , which was released in 2001. The album became a worldwide success, spawning hit singles Get the Party Started , Don't Let Me Get Me , Just Like a Pill and Family Portrait . Songwriter and producer Linda Perry wrote many of the songs on the album and was a guest singer on the song "Lonely Girl". The album sold 13 million copies worldwide.
History of origin
After Can't Take Me Home , P! Nk wanted to be able to determine their own music. She stated:
“All the girls that came out in the last couple of years, we all got thrown into one bucket. I don't want people to throw me in that bucket. "
“All the girls who have released albums in the past few years have been lumped together. I don't want to belong in this pot "
She recruited 4-Non-Blondes singer Linda Perry to write a new album with her. The reason she wanted to write with Perry was because of the 4 non-blondes album Bigger, Better, Faster, More! , which P! nk called one of her favorite albums and which she enjoyed in her spare time. She moved into Perry's house with guitar and piano for three months to record the album.
After working on the album, Linda Perry was again in great demand in music circles. So she subsequently worked with Christina Aguilera and Courtney Love .
Regarding the title of the album, she said:
"I think we all feel misunderstood, and our main goal is to be appreciated for all that we are - most of the time we don't even fully understand ourselves ... thus the title of my album."
"I think we all feel misunderstood, and our goal is to be recognized as we are - most of the time we don't even understand ourselves ... hence the title of my album."
P! Nk described the experience of producing the album as amazing, liberating, stimulating, just making music the way it should be. The album depicts her in “complete nudity” as Perry had “taken off all her clothes”.
P! Nk worked on most of the songs with Linda Perry, who was also the guest vocalist on "Lonely Girl". Other guest musicians can be heard in the song "Misery", in which Steven Tyler from Aerosmith and Richie Sambora from Bon Jovi take part. Furthermore, the producers Scott Storch and Dallas Austin wrote on the album.
Songs
Missundaztood's texts deal with different topics. In “Don't Let Me Get Me,” P! Nk explains that she's not like any of the other pop sensations in the industry. In the song she also tells of her early days in the girl group Choice and her producer LA Reid . The record company sent the artist to behavioral courses and media coaching in order to be able to market her better afterwards. Reid from LaFace Records was initially not enthusiastic about the new music as she made a name for herself with her successful R&B debut.
In " Just Like a Pill " she describes her drug abuse as a teenager . Her father was sent to the Vietnam War . This inspired her to write the song "My Vietnam", which tells the story of her father. At the end of the song you can hear a sound interpolation from Jimi Hendrix 's version of " The Star-Spangled Banner ".
" Family Portrait " is a response to her parents' divorce. The conflict is described from the perspective of a child when a family suddenly threatens to split up into two parts. After hearing the song, P! Nk's parents realized for the first time the pain their child must have suffered from the breakup. "Lonely Girl" describes the feeling of confusion and unwanted loneliness from her new fame.
P! Nk received a lot of criticism for their album because it was full of anger. She herself said:
“Some people think I'm an angry girl, a boy-killer, or are just plain confused by me. … My main focus this time was to not only concentrate on one musical aspect of me (I'm still funky and I love hip-hop), but to show all my colors good and bad. "
“Some people think I'm an angry girl, a 'boy killer', or are just irritated by my way of doing things. ... This time it was important for me not to limit myself to just one musical aspect (I'm still 'funky' and love hip-hop), but to show all sides of myself, the good and the bad. "
In 2003 Missundaztood was nominated at the Grammy Awards for Best Album in the Pop Category and for Best Live Performance in Pop. At the MTV Video Music Awards 2002 , the song " Get the Party Started " won the categories "Best Women's Video" and "Best Dance Video".
The song "18 Wheeler", in which the word fuck appears countless times, had to be censored so that the album would not get a " Parental Advisory " sticker.
The songs on the album were presented on P! Nks Party Tour in 2002 . The tour took place because P! Nk could not appear in the opening act for Janet Jackson's "All For You" tour, as the dates set for Europe were canceled in response to the terrorist attacks of September 11th . The tour took P! Nk through North America, Europe, Australia and Asia.
