Family Portrait is a pop song by the US singer P! Nk and the American keyboardist and music producer Scott Storch . The title was released in 2001 on P! Nk's album Missundaztood on Arista Records and was released as the fourth single from this album in 2002.

content

The autobiographical text describes a girl's feelings when her parents split up. P! Nk addressed her own experiences as a child of divorce in this song. Her father James Moore and mother Judith separated when P! Nk was eight years old.

The lyrics are addressed both to the mother ( "Mama please stop cryin, I can't stand the sound" - Mama stop crying, I can't stand the sound) and to the father ( "Daddy please stop yellin, I can't stand the sound ” - Papa stop screaming, I can't stand the sound) and describes the family conflicts as a theater of war ( “ It ain't easy growin up in World War III ” - It's not easy growing up in World War III).

Music video

The music video made for the single by the British director Sophie Muller shows a dark-haired P! Nk as well as a dark-haired girl , dressed in many shots by Kelsey Lewis, who performs the text in lip- sync. The video is the first collaboration between Muller and P! Nk, whose previous music videos were all created by Dave Meyers.

Muller's music video was nominated for Pop Video of the Year and Best Direction of a Female Artist at the Music Video Production Association Awards in 2003.

reception

Victoria Segal reviewed the song for the British music magazine New Musical Express . She describes the title as a shameless donation marathon rock, which is intended to soundtrack every child in need from today until the day of judgment ("a shameless telethon rock, destined to soundtrack every children in need from now until Doomsday") ).

Paul Matthews discussed the title in the UKMIX e-zine as not the strongest on the album, but still as a sure candidate for a top 10 placement. He highlighted Pink's prickly and gruff presentation as being particularly effective on the subject.

Versions

The version of the title contained on the album is just under five minutes longer than the radio edit used for the single release, which is just under four minutes long. Both versions were recorded at Enterprise Studios in Burbank and mixed by Dave Pensado.
