Lady Marmalade , originally known in Europe as Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir? published, is a Disco - Funk -Song of Kenny Nolan and Bob Crewe . The song was recorded by the girl group Labelle , consisting of singers Patti LaBelle , Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash in New Orleans ; the producers were Allen Toussaint and Vicki Wickham . Labelle released it on their album Nightbirds and as a single on Epic Records .
Music and lyrics
The text is "an ode to a prostitute in New Orleans"; the French line of the chorus "Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir?" means "Do you want to sleep with me tonight?" The music thrives on "one of the greatest soul-funk grooves of all time" with an "unforgettable melody and rhythm, so funky and natural that it seems as if it has always existed."

The song became a number one hit in the United States , Canada and the Netherlands , and made it to the top 20 in the UK, Italy, Austria and other countries. Nightbirds also reached the US top ten as part of the success of the single the albums. The All-Music-Guide judged:
“The quality of the song is proven by its consistency - it's been covered many times and by many different artists , and it always sounds good. That's true for the true-to-the-original soul version of the O'Jays as well as for Herbie Mann's fusion interpretation, that's true for the rough soul- blues cover versions of Willis "Gator" Jackson and Irma Thomas as well as for the smooth dance-pop version of the Britpop divas All Saints . Lady Marmalade sounds good in any arrangement , but in the hands of Labelle the song was undeniably great. "
In the list of the 500 best songs of all time of Rolling Stone was Lady Marmalade set in 2004 in the original version of Labelle ranked 479th Dave Marsh chose the song in his book The Heart of Rock & Soul - The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever Made at # 984 and called it "The Greatest French Lesson in Disco".

Version from Moulin Rouge
In 2001 the version of the film Moulin Rouge by Christina Aguilera , Lil 'Kim , Mýa and Pink was another great success. The song was released as the first single from the soundtrack album in the summer of 2001. It was produced by Missy Elliott and Rockwilder , there is also a version with Missy Elliott.

The music video was directed by Paul Hunter . It was filmed on the sets of Moulin Rouge in Los Angeles in late March 2001 .
