Sarah Dash

Sarah Dash (born August 18, 1945 in Trenton , New Jersey , † September 20, 2021 ) was an American soul singer who was best known as a member of the band Labelle .

Life and work

Sarah Dash was the seventh of thirteen children in an African American family. Her father was a bishop of an evangelical church. As a teenager she met Patti LaBelle , with whom she and another member formed the band Labelle. They became world famous with hits like Lady Marmalade . In 1978 she started a solo career, but did not have the resounding success of her former colleagues. She was a member of Labelle from 1959 to 1978. She was also involved in the reunion in 2008.

She brought out four studio albums and sang as a background singer for the Rolling Stones , Nile Rodgers and The O'Jays, among others . She was also featured on some of her Labelle colleagues' solo albums. She had a long collaboration with Keith Richards .

In 2011 Ari Gold created the duet Sparkle for his album Between The Spirit & The Flesh .

Her social engagement focused on supporting homeless women with children in New York .

Her autobiography Dash for Diva served as the basis for a musical that was performed in the city of New Brunswick .
