Before the CNE was held annually in Toronto, a major agricultural fair was held in a different Ontario city each year . In 1878 Toronto hosted the fair and was very successfully accepted with over 100,000 visitors. Because of this success, local politicians and business representatives campaigned for the fair to be held permanently in Toronto in the future. The rural communities resisted this plan because the traveling exhibition enabled the communities to present themselves. Nevertheless, the Toronto supporters prevailed, so that since September 3, 1879, the first trade fair takes place as the Toronto Industrial Exhibition . The venue west of downtown on the Ontario shore is now called Exhibition Place. In addition to the exhibition area, it also offers parking spaces on an area of 1.1 square kilometers. The fair was not held between 1942 and 1946. The first time the CNE was televised was on August 2, 1952. In the summer of 2003, the CNE celebrated its 125th edition.
