Henry William Stisted
Sir Henry William Stisted , KCB (born 1817 in Saint-Omer , France , † December 10, 1875 in Upper Norwood , Surrey ) was a British officer and colonial administrator. From 1867 to 1868 he was the first lieutenant governor of the Canadian province of Ontario .
biography
Like his father, Stisted was a professional soldier and studied at Sandhurst Military Academy . In 1835 he joined the British Army and was promoted several times, up to the rank of major general in 1864. He served in Afghanistan , Persia and British India . In 1857 he commanded the vanguard of Henry Havelock's troops at the siege of Lucknow . He was later stationed on the north-western Indian border.
In November 1866, Stisted was appointed commander of British forces in the province of Canada . He went to Toronto and took command on January 1, 1867. In addition, he served from July 1, 1867 as the first lieutenant governor of the newly founded province of Ontario . The most important role in this representative office was the appointment of the provincial first prime minister, John Sandfield Macdonald . William Pearce Howland Stisted succeeded him on July 15, 1868 . He stayed in Toronto for another year, briefly took command in Québec and finally returned to Great Britain.
