The Natural Science Association for Schleswig-Holstein , based in Kiel, is a non-profit association for scientific research with currently over 200 members.

History

In 1855 the "Association north of the Elbe for the dissemination of scientific knowledge" was founded, in 1867 the "Association for Geography and Natural Sciences" was constituted. Both associations merged on April 13, 1872 to form the "Natural Science Association for Schleswig-Holstein". The first board member included Karl August Möbius . After just six years, the association had 610 members.

Well-known members of the association were Walther Flemming , Victor Hensen , Wolf Herre , Berndt Heydemann , Herbert Jankuhn , Heinrich Lenz , Johanna Mestorf , Ludwig Meyn , Karl August Möbius , Erna Mohr , Max Planck , Adolf Remane , Alfred Rust and August Thienemann .

The aim of the association is to arouse and promote interest in the natural sciences. This is done by organizing scientific lectures with discussions, excursions, supporting scientific research, and publishing scientific publications. The association also seeks to bring scientists from different disciplines together and to promote communication between them and the public.

Writings of the Natural Science Association for Schleswig-Holstein

Since its first publication in 1872, the publication organ of the Natural Science Association for Schleswig-Holstein has presented current research results to experts and the interested public at the same time. Today it appears as a peer-reviewed journal for international publications from all scientific disciplines. It is run by libraries in 56 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, America and Australia. It is also freely available as an online journal on the Internet ( electronic journal library ).
