Sam Tingle (born August 24, 1921 in Manchester , † December 19, 2008 in Cape Town ) was a Formula 1 racing driver from Southern Rhodesia , now Zimbabwe .
Career
Sam Tingle was a great racing enthusiast who started racing an old Bentley in his native Rhodesia as early as 1947 . He drove an MG in the early 1950s before buying a used Connaught that was previously owned by Johnny Claes . With this vehicle he won the Rhodesian championship.
Tingle competed regularly in races in the South African monoposto championship in the 1960s . Mostly he drove Doug Serrurier's racing cars and in 1966 he celebrated his first big win by winning the Border Trophy in East London .
Tingle competed five times in the South African Grand Prix between 1963 and 1969 . In 1969 Tingle, who was the second well-known Rhodesian racing driver of the 1960s alongside John Love , achieved his best placement in the southernmost country of Africa with eighth place. His last racing car was a Brabham BT24 .
